Privacy Policy
Effective Date: December 14, 2025 (Revised)
Our Core Promise: EssayPolish is a zero-profit, completely free service dedicated solely to helping you improve your academic writing. We monitor usage data (like page clicks) only to improve the service's stability and performance. We do not collect, sell, rent, or monetize your personal information or your essay content for advertising or profiling. Data is stored only for the functional purpose of saving your history, and you have complete control over its deletion.
1. Our Operational Model: Free and Non-Commercial
EssayPolish is an entirely free and non-commercial platform provided without cost to the end-user. We are not a company, but a project operating on a zero-profit model. Our existence is solely to provide a helpful service. We are not an advertising platform, and our funding (if any) is personal, not reliant on monetizing user data, essays, or usage patterns for financial gain. This policy reflects our commitment to providing a safe, private, and non-exploitative environment for students and writers.
2. Infrastructure for Authentication and History (Supabase)
To provide a persistent, secure service that saves your work and recognizes you upon return, we rely on established, secure, third-party infrastructure. We only store data that is necessary for you to use the core features of the application.
2.1. User Authentication and Database (Supabase)
We use Supabase for user management and its secure PostgreSQL database service for all data storage. This infrastructure handles:
- User Identifier (UID): When you sign in (anonymously or via an authentication provider), a unique User ID is generated and stored securely by the Supabase Auth service. We use this UID only to partition and protect your saved essay history via Supabase Row Level Security (RLS).
- Authentication Tokens: Temporary, encrypted tokens are used to verify your identity while you are using the application.
- Functional History Data: Your saved essay text and polishing results are stored in a private PostgreSQL table linked to your unique UID. We treat this as a secure, hosted relational store for your history.
2.2. Functional History Data (Stored Temporarily)
This data is stored so you can revisit, review, and continue working on your past essays. It is stored securely in a private collection linked to your unique User ID.
- Original Essay Text: The text you submit for polishing.
- Polished Result Text: The text generated by the AI model.
- Metadata: Timestamps, the essay's title, and the type of focus requested (e.g., 'Clarity Focus').
Crucial Fine Print: We do not persistently log, monitor, or store the content of your essays on our own servers beyond the secure Supabase database provided by the platform for your history feature. When you delete an item, it is permanently removed from your history database.
3. How We Interact with Third-Party AI Services (Secure API)
EssayPolish utilizes sophisticated AI models to perform the actual writing critique and polishing. We communicate with these models using a secure Application Programming Interface (API).
- AI Provider: We utilize a secure third-party AI API to process and refine your essay text.
- Data Transmission: When you click "Polish Essay," the Original Essay Text and your chosen Focus Parameters are securely transmitted via this AI API.
- AI Processing: The AI model processes this text and returns the polished response directly to your browser.
Data Handling Note: EssayPolish itself does not retain or store these API requests or responses for the purpose of internal model training, marketing analysis, or data profiling. We only facilitate the secure transfer of your text to the AI and back to you.
4. Usage Data and Analytics (Google Analytics)
To monitor application stability, understand feature popularity, and diagnose technical issues, we use Google Analytics (GA4). This helps us improve the user experience and ensure the service is running correctly. This data is collected and processed by Google in an aggregated and anonymized fashion wherever possible and is never used by EssayPolish for advertising, marketing, or selling to third parties.
4.1. Specific Usage Data Monitored
We monitor the following generalized usage metrics solely for service improvement:
- Page Clicks and Feature Usage: We track clicks on application elements (e.g., the "Polish Essay" button) and how often features are used to prioritize development and identify bugs.
- Time on Page: To understand engagement and performance bottlenecks.
- Technical Information: Basic, non-identifying information about your device, operating system, and browser to ensure compatibility.
Strict Data Limitation: We explicitly DO NOT pass any personally identifying information (PII), your essay content, or unique Supabase User IDs to Google Analytics. The purpose is strictly limited to application performance and usage statistics.
5. Data We Explicitly DO NOT Collect or Store
To be unequivocally clear about our commitment to user privacy, EssayPolish does not collect, record, or retain the following categories of information for tracking, profiling, or monetization:
- Selling or Renting Data: We do not sell, rent, or trade any user data (personal information or usage statistics) to third parties.
- Advertising/Marketing: We do not use any collected data to serve advertisements or create marketing personas.
- IP Addresses for Profiling: While Google Analytics processes generalized location data, we do not log or use IP addresses for specific user tracking or profiling purposes outside of Google Analytics' standard, anonymized processing.
- Browser Fingerprinting Data: We do not attempt to uniquely identify you across different sessions or devices outside of the standard authentication and functional Google Analytics process.
6. Your Rights and Data Management
You maintain full ownership and control over the content you upload and the history data stored in your private database partition.
- Right to Access: All the data we store (your essay history and account UID) is visible to you directly within the application's "History" section.
- Right to Rectification and Deletion: You can edit or permanently delete any saved essay at any time via the application interface. Deleting your account will result in the immediate and permanent deletion of all associated history data from Supabase.
- Opt-Out of Analytics: If you wish to opt-out of the anonymous usage tracking performed by Google Analytics (GA4), you can use a browser-level tool, such as the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on (available online). You can stop using the service at any time.
7. Security Measures and Infrastructure (Supabase)
All functional data is managed by highly secure cloud infrastructure (Supabase). This includes:
- Encryption In Transit: All communications between your browser, Supabase, and the AI API are protected using industry-standard TLS/SSL encryption.
- Data Segregation: Your essay history is stored in a private partition and is only accessible via authenticated requests tied to your unique User ID, secured by the Supabase Row Level Security (RLS) rules.
- No Direct Server Access: We do not maintain custom servers that store your content; we rely entirely on the robust, audited security protocols of the Supabase platform.
8. Amendments to This Privacy Policy
We may update this policy to reflect changes in our service or regulatory requirements. We will notify users of any significant changes by updating the "Effective Date" at the top of this policy page. We recommend reviewing this policy periodically.
9. Contact Information
If you have any questions, concerns, or requests regarding your data or this policy, please contact us via the following methods:
